Glass-Less Solar Panels - The Future of Solar Panels?

Instead, these panels use advanced materials such as transparent polymers or other durable, lightweight alternatives, as well as different backing sheets to give them a thermal advantage.

This innovation not only reduces the weight of the panels but could also enhance their durability over the semi flexible panels already on the market today.


Advantages of Glass-Less Solar Panels

  1. Lightweight: Traditional solar panels are often heavy and rigid due to the glass layer. Glass-less panels, on the other hand, are significantly lighter and potentially more flexible, making them easier to install on various surfaces.

  2. Enhanced Durability: Glass is prone to breaking or cracking under extreme weather conditions. The materials used in glass-less panels are more resilient, offering better protection against harsh environments and reducing the risk of damage.

  3. Improved Efficiency: The absence of glass can reduce the reflection of sunlight, allowing more light to be absorbed by the PV cells. This can potentially increase the overall efficiency of the panels, leading to higher energy output.

Disadvantages of Glass-Less Solar Panels

Over time, these materials could degrade, impacting the panel's performance and lifespan. During accelerated age testing they are holding up but in the real world only time can tell.

  2. UV Degradation: Some polymers used in glass-less panels may be susceptible to UV degradation, leading to reduced efficiency and potential discoloration over time. Manufacturers are working on UV-resistant coatings, but this still remains a huge challenge moving forward.

  3. Impact resistant: The materials used in glass-less panels are more resilient, against harsh environments but are not as resilient to impact from a ball for example could render the panel dead.

  4. Efficiency: The absence of glass has caused the back panel and the frame to be slightly larger giving the panel more rigidity. By default this will bring the efficiency of the panel down. Use our panel efficiency calculator to check the panels you are looking at and not the marketing hype.

  5. Thermal Expansion: The materials used in glass-less panels will have different thermal expansion properties compared to glass. This can lead to warping or other structural issues when exposed to extreme temperature variations. We haven’t seen this yet on our various test panels but then again we haven’t yet got into the summer.

  6. Market Acceptance: As a relatively new technology, glass-less solar panels may face resistance from consumers and industries accustomed to traditional glass-based panels. Education and demonstration of their benefits will be crucial for widespread adoption.

  7. Initial Costs: Although glass-less panels may eventually be cheaper, the initial development and manufacturing costs can be high. This will result in higher upfront prices for early adopters until the technology becomes thoroughly tested and more mainstream.
